Biography
Claude Levi-Strauss shall not be associated with Levis jeans. Although the latter is a known brand in the market, Claude Levi-Strauss with due respect is a known French anthropologist. He is an author in the development of social anthropology. He belongs to an intellectual French Jewish family. A brilliant scientist who keeps on researching the theories involved in understanding man in a social group. His quest for human as a social being did not stop when he studied law and philosophy. He believed that a human being possess certain civilization within himself. He did not believe on the modern way of civilization which the west initiated for centuries.

He actually observed the social behavior of man out of his travel. According to him, man by its nature has its own natural mind that he makes his own law. From birth, man is free from undue influence of his environment. His natural mind was only influence from his culture. Claude Levi-Strauss stressed further that he did not believe on "history and humanism". He believed that man belongs to his culture. It influences his behavior.

Claude Levi-Strauss is an advocate of "Structuralism". He emphasized that man has a social organization that made him react to environment. Based on his studies, it was inherent. His conflicting idea on history and humanism made him not finish his law studies. Law deals on history because laws are subject to amendments. Once amended, it becomes a history. Law deals on humanity because it deals on human justice. Although laws are there, to guide people but culture affects behavior of an individual.

Claude Levi-Strauss justification on the actual theories of "Structuralism" made him known globally. His expertise on the field of anthropology justifies the hierarchy theory of mans need. First he has to satisfy his basic needs (food, clothing and shelter). When satisfied, the need to belong to a social group is the next need.
