Biography
Claire Danes first entered the consciousness of American TV viewers in 1994, when she played Angela Chase in the TV drama My So-Called Life. This role landed her a Golden Globe, as well as an Emmy nomination. To date, the part of Angela Chase is still considered the memorable role that Claire Danes had in her entire career.
Claire Catherine Danes was born in Manhattan on April 12, 1979. She grew up in Los Angeles, California and attended an exclusive private school, Le Lycee Francaise De Los Angeles. She later went to Yale to study psychology in 1998, but she dropped out after two years so she could focus on her acting career.
Aside from playing Angela Chase, Claire Danes also appeared as the fragile Beth in Little Women alongside Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst and Susan Sarandon on 1994. In 1996, she played Juliet in the critically acclaimed Baz Luhrmann film Romeo + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. She also lent her voice to San in the English dub of Princess Mononoke, a Studio Ghibli animated film that Disney distributed in the United States on 1999.
Claire Danes also starred in Brokedown Palace with Kate Beckinsale and Bill Pullman. The film gained some notoriety during its production stages. Though the story is set in Thailand, the crew had to film mostly in the Philippines because they were not allowed to do so in Thailand; the authorities in Thailand felt that the movie is putting the Thai legal system in a bad light. Nonetheless, Claire Danes was declared a persona non grata in the Philippines for the derogatory remarks she made about the country.
Other films that Claire Danes appeared so far include the Academy-nominated The Hours (2002) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003). She also received acclaim for her part in Shopgirl, a film written by Steve Martin.
Claire Danes also did off-Broadway performances in plays such as Punk Ballet, Happiness, and Kids On Stage.
