Biography
Despite being born and raised in Brossard, Quebec on September 19, 1970, Christy Chung, star of many, many Cantonese-language movies, is unknown in her native Canada. Her father is Chinese and her mother Vietnamese, and the family itself has hailed from Vietnam.
Christy Chung's break into show business started in 1992, when she entered the Miss Chinese Montreal contest while she was still a student of tourism in Universite du Quebec a Montreal. Winning the beauty prize got her flying to Hong Kong for the Miss Chinese International pageant in 1993, which she also won.
At the onset of her career, Christy Chung could only speak French and Vietnamese, her mother tongues. Her first film appearance is as a prostitute chewing gum in the movie Love and Human Remains, a non-speaking role and having only a ten-second exposure. For her future roles, she had to learn how to speak English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and later on, Thai.
After winning the Miss Chinese International pageant in 1993, Christy Chung was cast as Moon in the movie The Bride with White Hair 2. It was this movie that won her stardom in Chinese cinema, and was only the first of a string of roles in Cantonese movies, including movies opposite Stephen Chow, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Christy Chung also appeared as part of the cast of Asian Charlie's Angels in 2001. She had minimal appearances in the Hollywood scene, appearing briefly as Charlotte Watson in the film The Medallion, which starred Jackie Chan and Claire Forlani.
One of the most notable roles Christy Chung ever had was as Khun Boonlueang, a nymphomaniac in the Thai erotic period drama Jan Dara in 2001. Jan Dara won best art direction and best cinematography, as well as garnered other nominations in the 2001 Thailand National Film Association Awards. The film was controversial at the time because it pushed the limits of Thailand's censorship laws.
