Biography
Moviegoers know Christopher Lee best for his iconic role as Count Dracula in a series of films made by Hammer Productions in the 1950s. He is also popular for his portrayal of Count Dooku in the prequel trilogy of Star Wars, as well as for his performance of Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings. But beyond those roles, not much is known to the regular moviegoer about Christopher Lee.

Moviegoers may not be aware that Christopher Lee is descended from the Carandini family, a very old aristocratic family in Italy through his mother, the Marchesina (Marchioness) Estelle Marie Carandini di Sarzano. His mother's second marriage to the banker Harcourt Rose made Lee a step-cousin to Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels, who is also Rose's nephew. It is this relationship to Ian Fleming that almost landed Christopher Lee a role as Dr. No in the first James Bond movie - almost, since the role was given to Joseph Wiseman.

Another thing that moviegoers may not know about Christopher Lee is that he is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings. He met Tolkien once and he makes it a point to read The Lord of the Rings at least once a year. His love for the fantasy masterpiece has also prompted him to lend his voice to The Lord of the Rings: Songs and Poems by J.R.R. Tolkien and to the Danish theater group The Tolkien Ensemble, playing roles such as Treebeard and King Theoden.

Other tidbits that moviegoers may not be aware of regarding Christopher Lee is that he is an author, and that among his books are Christopher Lee's Treasury of Terror, The Lord of Misrule, and Tall, Dark and Gruesome. He is also fluent in Spanish, German, Italian and French, and he is the voice behind King Haggard in the classic animated movie The Last Unicorn. Queen Elizabeth II made him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001.
