Chris Evert was born on 21st December 1954 at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Her father Jimmy Evert was a professional tennis coach, so tennis was in their family which paved the way for her to become professional tennis player. She began taking tennis lessons when she was five from her father and was ranked number one in the 'under 14' category in the year 1969. It the year 1970 she came to the notice of the tennis world when she defeated Margaret Court 7-6, 7-6 in a semifinal. Court had just won the Grand Slam and she was No 1.
Evert made her grand slam debut at the age of 16 in the year 1971 but she lost it to Billie Jean King in the semifinal. During the year 1973 she was a finalist at the French open and Wimbledon. A year later she won both the titles claiming her first Grand Slam and won 55 consecutive matches. For the next five years she was the world's number one. Martina Navratilova emerged as a strong rival of Evert though a good friend off the court but very strong contender inside. She was successful on all surfaces but it was clay court which she dominated.
On 12th May 1979 she lost to Tracy Austin in the semi final of the Italian open by 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4). During 1981 after her consecutive 72 victories on clay courts she lost to Hana Mandlikova in the French Open. Evert won the French Open title seven times which is a record. She retired from her professional tour in 1989. During her career she won 157 singles and 8 doubles titles and she reached the semifinals in 273 of the 303 tournaments in which she participated.
Evert's romance with top tennis player Jimmy Connors captured the public imagination but it was short lived. Later on she reportedly dated Burt Reynolds and John Gardner. Evert married twice and has three sons from her marriages. Both a sensation on and off the court Chris Evert will always be remembered for her undying spirit and amazing talent in tennis.
