Biography
In a business as fickle as the entertainment industry, very few people have withstood the test of time in over 40 years and still be a household name today - so much so that it has generated the saying "in the aftermath of a nuclear war, only two things will survive - cockroaches and Cher".
Born Cheryl Sarkisian La Piere on May 20, 1946, as eccentric as she may seem (she has always been in the news for, among other things, her over-the-top fashion sense and the reported amount of times she has had plastic surgery) Cher is only one of a handful of entertainers to have won four of the most important awards for a performer: an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy and three Golden Globes.
Cher's career started in the mid-sixties when she met Sonny Bono, with whom she would go on to become both entertainment as well as real-life pair. The two had a string of very successful hits in the 60s and 70s and their own hit TV show, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which ran for four years. Sonny and Cher also had a daughter during their marriage, Chastity, but they divorced in 1975 after having been married for nearly ten years. Though the divorce was bitter the two eventually soothed out their differences and became friends. Sonny Bono's death in 1998 devastated her. During the funeral, she delivered a very moving eulogy praising her late ex-husband.
Cher eventually went on a rollercoaster of ups and downs, both personally and professionally. She married once again to singer Greg Allman of the Allman Brothers' music group and had a son Elijah Blue, but that marriage did not last long either. She also had difficulties being taken seriously for acting roles since she was very stereotyped as the has-been from the frivolous 70s pop music era, but when she won critical acclaim for her performances such as in Silkwood and her Academy-award winning performance in Moonstruck, she has since gained the long overdue respect she so desired.
Today Cher keeps busy as a recording artist, still spinning out hits after 40 years while looking as youthful as ever - knife or luck, we'll never know. All we do know is, we'll always love her.
