Welsh singer Charlotte Church has packed more experience in her 21 years (and has sold more records) than most people twice her age do in a lifetime. Gifted with one of the most beautiful voices in the world today, the Llandaff native started out in life as Maria Reed but was adopted by her stepfather, James Church, after her mother married him.
Since a very early age she has always had an itching to be onstage and in the limelight - her fist "appearance" was at the tender age of three when she preformed the song "Ghostbusters" to an astonished crowd at a holiday camp -and literally had to be dragged offstage. Since then, she has wowed crowds all over the world with her impressive vocal range and her career has been a string of non-stop successes, ranging from highly-selling classical albums like Voice of An Angel in 1998 to the more recent pop album Tissues and Issue in 2005, both of which reached the top 5 of the UK charts and which generated top selling singles. Hers is also the voice in the theme song of the film A Beautiful Mind.
But along with growing up in the public eye come also the pitfalls of living under public scrutiny - among other things, sordid details of Church's amorous relationships made been made public by her own boyfriends. She and her current boyfriend, Gavin Henson, have announced that they will have a child in September of this year. She has also gone on record for heavily criticizing the Catholic Church and the Pope, leading some Christian music distributors to stop selling her products. Her own TV show was scheduled to air but was pulled just after its pilot episode.
But we would like to think that these are all just growing pains. One thing remains clear - her voice and talent are undeniable. Maybe with her pending motherhood she can find some new perspective - and sing the most beautiful lullabies to her new child.
