Biography
Very few models can boast a successful acting career, let alone win an Academy Award. South African beauty Chrlize Theron is an exception to that rule.
Born on August 7, 1975 in Benoi, South Africa, Theron (pronounced, in her own words, as "thrown") of French/German descent, she started modeling at the age of 16, after having won a modeling contract in Milan. When the contract expired, she was in New York, and decided to stay there to pursue a dancing career. She enrolled in the Joffrey Ballet School but unfortunately an injury at the age of 18 put paid to her dancing aspirations.
Since she was unable to dance, she tried her luck at acting and moved to Los Angeles. She was first cast in a non-speaking role eight months later in an indie movie. She then her career has skyrocketed and she has been cast in Hollywood blockbusters such as The Cider House Rules, The Devil's Advocate, and Mighty Joe Young.
In 2003 she was cast to play serial killer Aileen Wournos in the film Monster, in which she is unrecognizable as we know her in real life - she gained much weight to take on the role. This physical transformation and her stellar performance in the film lead her to win an Oscar for best actress, and many film critics have said that Theron's performance is simply one of the best on-screen performances ever.
Theron has stated that in order to prepare for the role, she sought inspiration from her own personal life: tragedy struck her family when her abusive father was shot and killed by her mother in an act of self defense. No charges were pressed, but the re-elaboration of that painful event surely contributed to the passion with which Theron portrayed the serial killer.
