Charles Taylor was the President of Liberia from 1997-2003. He created a lot of chaos in his own country, Liberia and got himself entangled in a civil war. In the year 1989, Charles initiated a revolutionary assault from a national community called Cote d'Ivoire, which had thrown Liberia into civil war. For six years, various revolutionary factions competed for the jurisdiction of the country and its natural resources. A peace settlement was attained in year 1995, and two years after, Charles was elected as the President.

Charles is a son of an Americo-Liberian and a Gola Tribe member. He went to school in the United States and was involved in the Union of Liberian Associations (ULA). Before being elected as President, he was an oral antagonist of the Liberian President William Tolbert during the late 1970s. But after a few months, Tolbert was killed in a coup headed by Samuel K. Doe, and Charles acquired the position thereafter. But in May 1983, Charles declined from his position and was indicted of a million dollar plundering case. After declining from his position, Charles flew to the US but then he arrested again the following year in May 1984 and was detained in jail. But in September 1985, he successfully escaped from jail and headed for Africa and spent four years organizing the armed forces.

Charles started an adjacent connection with Foday Sankoh, who is the chief of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), which is a Sierra Leonean revolutionary faction. He provided guns and other war materials to RUF in exchange for diamonds. In year 2003, he was newly transferred from Nigeria and immediately began looking for a safe place to stay. Currently he is now appealing for a trial at the Special Court for Sierra Leone (a UN backed war crimes tribunal), with eleven anti-humanity charges filed against him.
