Biography
Chanda Rubin one of the most talented women on the tennis court was ranked number six the world, but was forced to take a long sabbatical from the world of tennis due to a series of career threatening injuries that she suffered on her hands and knees. But she overcame these seemingly insurmountable odds and returned in 2002 competing gallantly in several tournaments exceeding the expectations of all her fans and well-wishers.
Chanda Rubin was born on 18th Feb 1976, in Lafayette, Louisiana. There was a tennis court in her back yard and one day she awoke to find, the house empty and realized that her parents were playing Tennis in the back yard. It was on that eponymous day that she grabbed the racquet and insisted on being taught to play and has never looked back since!
In 1988, at the young age of 11, Rubin won the under 12 National Championship, and then a year later she won the 14 and under tournament. She also became the only player to be granted a U.S open wild card entry without having competed in the 18 and under the national championship. At age 15, the talented young phenomenon won the Wimbledon Girls' Singles Championship, and became a professional the very same year. Her parents however wanted her to complete her education and this made her skip the French Open entirely to concentrate on her studies.
She played and won against some of the worlds greatest and was dubbed by the media as "the new great Black hope." The William Sisters (Venus and Serena) treat her like a role model. The year 1995 was the best year in her professional career. It seemed that she blossomed with each stroke she played she was honored by the American Tennis Association (ATA) as the Player of the year and USTA honored her as the female athlete of the year.
