Cate Blanchett, enraptured millions of movie buffs with sterling performances in several award winning films like Elizabeth, Bandits and Lord of the rings. An actress who oozes drama and passion from every pore of her being, Cate simply rocks. Catherine Blanchett was born on 14th May 1969, in Melbourne, Australia to a Texan father and an Australian mother. She was exposed to a curious intermingling of cultures at a very young age. Cate's father passed away when she was merely ten years old, and it was left to the mother to bring up not only Cate but also an older brother and a younger sister. After completing her initial schooling from Melbourne, she attended Methodist Girls College where she perused her passion for acting. When she was 18, she played her first part as a non descript extra, where she had to cheer for an American boxer who was loosing to his Egyptian rival.
She later moved to Sidney to study theatre at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. Cate Blanchett graduated in 1992 and began her acting career by playing the female lead in David Mamets play Oleanna. She also played the part of Ophelia in the much acclaimed Company B's production of Hamlet.
Cate Blanchett made her film debut as an Australian nurse who was captured by the Japanese in the movie Paradise Road. Blanchett's career really took off with her brilliant portrayal of Elizabeth 1 of England in the 1998 movie Elizabeth. This role earned her a nomination in the Academy Awards for the best actress that she narrowly lost out to Gwyenth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love. However she did win the BAFTA and a Golden Globe for the same role.
Blanchett was nominated for another BAFTA award the following year for her for her role in the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley. And she bagged the highly sought after role of Queen Galadriel in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy "The Lord of the Rings". Her superlative performance in the movie earned her an army of fans addicted to the fantasy genre.
