Biography
Visiting http://www.yusufislam.org.uk/ may sound a bit wacky but don't be surprised as Cat Stevens is no other than Yusuf Islam in real life! The British musician and philanthropist-educator was born in 1948 and since the day he started off in the music world as Cat Stevens is credited with over 60 million albums all over the world! A remarkable achievement one must admit. Cat Stevens converted to Islam at the young age of 29 and continues to entertain the world with his music. His recent album called An Other Cup is the result of his return to the music world after years of working towards world peace and social causes. It is also the backbone of his web site that is worth visiting for its unique presentation!
Cat's bout with tuberculosis at a young age of 19 and his 'near death' experience due to drowning are responsible for his converting to Islam. He continues to dabble in music and lately indicates some form of a return to his earlier profession - but is more busy since his conversion on world peace matters and was also associated with a few controversies regarding Rushdie and the 9/11 attacks. The USA remained a forbidden territory to Yusuf Islam in spite of his earning many awards on the peace front!
In 2005, Yusuf joined hands with a well known Indian composer - A. R. Rahman to compose "Indian Ocean" a musical tribute to the devastating Tsunami of 2004. He was also interviewed by the famous Larry King in October 2004, an interview that was ardently followed by millions of fans worldwide. Just two months ago Yusuf Islam (formerly called Cat Stevens) was awarded the Mediterranean Peace Prize in Naples, Italy. He is continuing to fight for the cause of World Peace wherever his presence is required as he solemnly told Larry King in the aforesaid interview across the Atlantic.
