Biography
Carly Elisabeth Simon was born on June 15, 1945 in New York City. This eminent singer-songwriter and guitarist was included in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994.
Simon was born to Richard L. Simon, the co-founder of Simon & Schuster, Inc. and Andrea Louise Simon, a civil rights activist and a singer. Richard was a gifted pianist who inculcated in Carly and her sister Lucy a love for music right from their childhood. Carly grew up in the neighborhood of Bronx along with her two sisters Joanna and Lucy and her brother Peter.
Simon got married to fellow singer-songwriter James Taylor in 1972 and went on to have two children with him, a daughter Sarah Maria ("Sally") and a son Benjamin Simon Taylor. Simon divorced Taylor in 1983. She is presently married to James Hart, a writer, poet and businessman and stays at Martha's Vineyard.
Simon began her singing career with her sister Lucy as The Simon Sisters and made three albums before Lucy went the family way. Carly also appeared in the movie Taking Off in 1971 where she played the role of a struggling singer.
Carly Simon's solo singing career began with Elektra Records with her self-titled album. It contained a major hit, "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" - a haunting melody. Simon's biggest hit "You're So Vain" came with the 1972 album No Secrets. In 1973 Simon performed in Livingston Taylor's album Over The Rainbow in which she sang with both Livingston and James Taylor on the songs "Pretty Woman" and "Loving Be My New Horizon".
Her second biggest US hit was "Nobody Does It Better" from the soundtrack to the James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me". In 1976, Simon made her only appearance on Saturday Night Live but it was a taped and not a live performance.
Simon has contributed to countless recordings, albums and movie soundtracks, and has also written several books for children which have been widely appreciated. She has won 2 Grammy Awards, as Best New Artist in 1971 and for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television in 1990 for her song "Let the River Run" from the film Working Girl. She even won the Academy Award for Best Song in the year 1988 and the Golden Globe Award in 1989 for Best Original Song for the same song. In 1998, Simon was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and had mastectomy and received chemotherapy.
