Biography
Carlos Augusto Alves Santana was born on 20 July 1947 in Autlan de Nvarro, in Mexico. His family had a musical turn of mind. Carlos developed a love for music at a very early age and began playing the violin at the age of five. In 1961 he shifted to San Francisco and graduated from Mission High School in 1965. He started working as a dishwasher to give financial support to his family.

Tom Frazier, Carlos Santana, Mike Carabello, Rod Harper Gus Rodriguez and Gregg Rolie came together in late 1966 to form a rock band named the Santana Blues Band. Later the band came to be known simply as Santana. It is not clear how the band developed its affinity to Latin rock, since neither Carlos nor Gregg Rolie had any fascination for that style of music. Most probably Carlos was ensnared by the gyrating dance movements that the Latino beats inspired.

The first album of the band, titled 'Santana' became an instant hit, and climbed to the top of US charts. To promote their music, the band performed in the Woodstock Music and Art Festival even before the release of their album. Their second album Abraxas was another chartbuster that sold over four million copies.

The classic Santana line-up of these first two albums has since been introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. The third album Santana 3 also reached the number one position in music charts. It boasted of the super hit solos "No One to Depend On" and "Everybody's everything". However, the band had started to disintegrate, with drug abuse by the members and internal conflicts. Financial irregularities also plagued the band.

Carlos and two of his band members joined the drummer of the erstwhile Band of Gypsies, named Buddy Miles, for a live concert that was recorded for an lvie album. The album achieved gold record status. The fourth album Caravanserai was released in 1972. It was mainly directed towards jazz fusion music. Over the years the album has reached platinum status.

In 1973, Carlos married Deborah King, the daughter of the late blues singer and guitar-player Saunders King. The couple had three children, named Salvador, Stella and Angelica. Santana and Deborah have founded a non-profit organization - "The Milagro Foundation" - that proffers financial assistance to meet educational, metical and other needs of underprivileged children worldwide.
