Biography
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was born in Livorno, Tuscany on 9th December, 1920. He acquired the diploma of Bachelor of Letters from the Scuola Normale of Pisa in 1941. Then he went to serve military duty in Albania. On the date of the peace agreement with the Allies, he left the Fascist Italian Social republic and went to Abruzzo. Later he crossed the border and joined the Partito d' Azione in Bari.
In 1946, he achieved a Bachelors degree in Law from the revered University of Pisa, and joined Banca d'Italia. The same year he got married to Franca Pila. He became a part of the central administration of the bank in 1960, and in 1973 he became Secretary General. In 1978 he was appointed the Director General and finally in 1979 he was elected the Governor of the bank as well as the President of Ufficio Italiano Cambi.
In April 1993 Ciampi was voted the Prime Minister of Italy and he held the post until March, 1994. He was appointed the Treasury Minister at 1996, and adopted the Euro as the official currency of Italy during his tenure. He personally designed the Italian coin of the denomination 1 Euro. He selected The Vitruvian Man, a creation of Leonardo da Vinci, as the symbol of unification of the material and the spiritual, and the epitome of symmetry. He chose this symbol because he wanted to put forward the perspective that it was money that served man and not the other way round.
Ciampi was elected the President of Italy at the first ballot in a joint session of the Italian Senate. He was highly esteemed by all the political parties represented in the parliament. In March 2005, Ciampi was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree by the Oxford University. He was presented with the Charlemagne Award of the City of Aachen on 5th May, 2005. The very next month, on June 2005, he received another honorary doctorate degree from the ɣole Normale Sup鲩eure of Paris.
A few days prior to the swearing-in ceremony of his successor Giorgio Napolitano, on 3rd May 2006, Ciampi resigned from the post of the President.
