Biography
Brian May was born on July 1947 at Hampton, Middlesex. At a very young age, he already showed great interest in music. At seven, he already knows how to play the ukulele, piano and guitar. He and his father even created their custom guitar. This was later known as the Red Special, Brian May's trademark in his entire career.
He easily can pick up things from the popular rock guitarists then. While in high school, Brian May formed the Instrumental Band 1984, which plays in London. And while in college, he worked with Roger Taylor, the drummer, Tim Staffell, his co-1984 member forming their rock trio, Smile. Unfortunately, the trio only had the single, Earth and Staffell left the group.
When the group's new singer, Freddie Mercury came, the Queen was formed and they venture on heavy rock with grand ballads. This is definitely something new compared with Smile. The Queen had their first recording contract in 1973, with a self-titled album. May wrote songs for the band, some of which are We Will Rock You, Now I'm Here and Tie Your Mother Down.
Queen had sold out shows and record-breaking albums throughout the 80's. May even shot a guitar lesson when the Red Special guitar was out to the public. But in 1991, Mercury died and the Queen was disbanded. May continued with his career as a solo artist. His single, Driven by You (featured in a Ford car Commercial) has won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Theme from a TV and Radio Commercial.
In 1993, May released his album Back to the Light. The album was a hit in Europe, which lead to May's European tour shows. May have also been an advocate of astronomy. He is writing a book about TR Williams, who is a stereo photographer in the 1850's.
May have been an inspiration to other popular guitarists in the past and until the present.
