Famous for his peculiar personality, Robert James Fischer (known as Bobby Fischer) was the first American that won the World Chess contest. He was born on March 9, 1943 in Chicago. After his parent's divorce, Bobby and his mother moved to Brooklyn. At the age of six, he learned how to play chess and even uttered words that all he would want to do is play chess.

In 1956, he was considered the youngest champion in USA National Junior Chess and a year after; he became the youngest champ for US Senior division. He made a name in the history as well being the youngest International Grandmaster when he was 15 years old.

One of his unforgettable battles was in Reykjavik, Iceland because Fischer defeated Boris Spassky (Russian Chess Champion) that lasted for twenty-one games.

Fischer fought a memorable and tumultuous battle against the Russian chess champion Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1972, beating Spassky in 21 games to become world champion. However in 1975, Anatoly Karpov was declared as the Chess Champion by ICF (International Chess Federation) when Fischer refused to defend his title. After that event, he went to Europe and was out of the limelight for about twenty years.

In Belgrade year 1992, he came back to confront Spassky in the "Revenge Match of the 20th Century." He won a match with Spassky, which was multi-million dollar worth game. Although he was successful, the rematch was considered to be illegal at that time so he became a fugitive and was caught only in Tokyo's Airport on July 16, 2004.
