The first artist that created a big name in Raggae is a Jamaican named Robert Nesta Marley or better known as Bob Marley. He wrote his own songs and loves using his guitar when performing.

Bob's father has a British blood (and is considered as white Jamaican) while his mother is a black Jamaican. And because Bob Marley originated from mixed races, he experience racial discrimination and even had doubts about his identity. After his Father's death, Marley and his mother have to move to Kingston's Trenchtown where he had learn how to defend himself against prejudice.

When he was fourteen, he quit from school and worked in a welder's shop in their town. He then played music with Bunny Livingston (who became his close friend) when he has extra time. Later on they met up with Peter Tosh and share the same aspirations as musicians.

Marley music speaks of street life, politics as well as religion. His first album was released in 1962 that includes One Cup of Coffe and Judge Not. The album was not well appreciated by the public. But a year after he became the lead singer and songwriter of "The Wailers" who released a single entitled "Simmer Down" that topped the Chats. With this, "The Wailers" made a name in the country and released top selling albums such as "Catch a Fire" and "Burnin." But in 1974, the band was broke up.

Marley continued on performing and his song entitled "No Woman, No Cry" gave him an international break. Some other popular Bob Marley songs include "Three Little Birds", "I Shot the Sheriff," "One Love," "Exodus," "Jammin," "Redemption Song" and "Could You Be Loved.

On May 11, 1981, Bob Marley died of cancer and his final words were "Money can't buy life." The "Legend," an album that has a compilation of his greatest songs, released on 1984 became the top selling reggae album.
