Biography
She was a gifted individual who started playing piano at age 11. Bjork's career started when her teacher sent a demo tape to a lone radio station in Iceland, a record of "I Love to Love" by Tina Charles. Since then, Bjork became a favorite in the music industry as she became greatly involved in numerous punk bands like Exodus, Tikarrass, Jam 80 and Kukl.
Bjork was born on November 21, 1965 from Gudmundur Gunnarsson and Hildur Hauksdottir. Her birthplace was Iceland's capital called Reykjavik, the heart of the economic and government activities in Iceland. Bjork's parents divorced before she reached two years old and she was taken care of her mother with her seven other siblings.
At age 14, Bjork was greatly influenced by punk rock music. With this interest, she enrolled and graduated in a music school in 1980 and formed a band called Jam-80 with Jakob Magnusson. Bjork's band work very hard in discovering the best kind of music and sound they could offer to the public. She later collaborated with other band player Einar Onn Benediktsson and Einar Melax and they called the band KUKL that means "sorcery" in the local language. Further, the band developed a sound described as Gothic rock that later became Bjork's singing style-that is actually punctuated with shrieks and howls.
In the summer of 1986, the KUKL group reinvented their band and adopted the name "Surgarcubes." The band released their first ever single translated as "Birthday" in the English language. The said song became a hit song in the UK. The band immediately signed a singing contract and gained significant number of fans even in the US and UK alike.
Unfortunately, the band dissolved in 1992 and the members went separate ways fulfilling their dreams. These days, Bjork is one of the high profiled celebrities in the USA and was once criticized for wearing a swan dress during the 2001 Academy Awards.
