His rebounds counted at 21,620 rebounds in total, Bill Russell is a five-time MVP and 12-time All Star award recipient. Russell is actually one of the legends in the basketball history.

William Felton Russell was born on February 12, 1934 in Monroe, Louisiana. His parents Charles and Katie Russell including the whole family struggled with racism in his early childhood days. His determination to be "somebody" made him develop his basketball skills. His father's decision to be freed from racism issues made him decide to move the whole family in Oakland, California despite the challenges of poverty issues.

Amidst the strong racism issues in the 1950s, Russell never allowed himself to be just a victim. He struggled enough to earn his reputation as a skilled basketball player of his time. In 1955, he was named the Most Outstanding Player during the NCAA Championship.

His advantageous 6-10 height made him a famous basketball persona, one of the best defense players in the arena. Because of his defense skill in the basketball, the then Boston Celtic coach and manager Red Auerbach included Russell in his team. Since then, the Celtics have been known for their defense players that include Bob Causy and Bill Sharman.

Since he joined Celtics, basketball's defense concepts were revolutionized. In 1980, Russell was named in the 35th NBA Hall of Fame and was voted the Greatest Player in the NBA history by the Professional Basketball Writers Association of America. As a great basketball player, Russell was known to be an asset of the Celtics since the day he joined the group. Russell made the team won many games because of his revolutionary defense tactics.

Russell was married to Rose Swisher, his highschool sweetheart from 1956 to 1973. Russel and Rose had three children Karen, William Jr and Jacob. Later, Russell married former Miss USA Dorothy Anstett in 1977.
