Biography
Bill Clinton is a politician and former President of the United States, as well as former Governor of Arkansas. He is famous for presiding over the United States during an era of peaceful economic expansion, and for being impeached over a scandal that darkened his last days in office.
Bill Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas on August 19th, 1946. He was raised in the nearby town of Hot Springs, Arkansas. His father died shortly before his birth and his mother remarried when he was young. As a child, Bill Clinton had musical talent, and while attending Hot Springs High School, he won first chair saxophone for the state band. However, he would decide against becoming a musician when he realized that he could never be as great as his musical heroes, but he could be truly great in politics. Two things which influenced him to be interested in politics as a child were Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, and a trip to the White House where he met President John F. Kennedy (which has been famously recorded on film).
After high school, Bill Clinton went to University College at Oxford and to Yale Law School where he met his future wife Hillary Rodham. In 1978, Bill Clinton was elected Governor of Arkansas, after having previously served as Attorney General of Arkansas and having worked as a law professor at the University of Arkansas.
Bill Clinton was the favorite Presidential candidate for the Democratic party in 1992. Despite some ups and downs in a contested primary, Bill Clinton ended up with a significant lead and became the consensus candidate. He won the 1992 election against George H. W. Bush and independent Ross Perot, aided by Bush's failure to keep his campaign promise not to raise taxes, and a worsening economy.
During Bill Clinton's presidency, the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 was put through. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy to allow homosexuals in the military was also instituted, and the Brady Bill (handgun waiting period) and Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act were also passed during this time. Bill Clinton was reelected to a second term, but much of the second term he was hounded by an investigation into his relationship with an intern named Monica Lewinsky, as well as the Whitewater financial scandal dating back to his days as Arkansas Governor. He was largely a lame duck President for the close of his Presidency, as he was impeached but not removed from office.
After his Presidency, Bill Clinton has gone on to make a great deal of money on public speaking engagements. He has also helped his wife Hillary run for office as the Senator of New York, and he has become more involved in charity. He currently works out of his office in Harlem, New York City.
