Biography
Betty Grable was a dancer, actress and singer. She was the most popular pin-up girl of the Second World War due to a famous bathing-suit photo.
Betty Grable was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 18th, 1916. Her mother wanted one of her daughters to become a famous actress, and got Betty Grable roles in movies growing up. In 1929, a thirteen year Betty Grable appeared in a chorus line in the movie "Happy Days". It was illegal for Betty Grable to appear in films at her age, but her mother used tricks and false ID to get around age restrictions when she could. Throughout the thirties, Betty Grable appeared in various small film roles including "Whoopee!" and "The Gay Divorcee". She finally became nationally famous for a Broadway appearance in 1939 in the Cole Porter musical "Dubarry Was A Lady".
During the forties, Betty Grable became one of 20th Century Fox's biggest stars, appearing in movies including "Moon Over Miami", "Springtime in the Rockies", "Coney Island", "Down Argentine Way", "Sweet Rosie O'Grady", "Diamond Horseshoe", "The Dolly Sisters", "Pin Up Girl", and "Mother Wore Tights". The famous pin up photograph of Betty Grable in a swimsuit was taken by Frank Powolny in 1943. The most highly paid and popular female star during the World War Two years, Betty Grable continued to make movies and appear in musical theatre throughout the early fifties. In 1953 she appeared in her last highly successful film "How to Marry a Millionaire", alongside Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall. During later years, she became tired of the film star schedule and left movie acting to make television appearances and play shows in Las Vegas.
Betty Grable died from lung cancer on July 2nd, 1973. Her image remains a well known piece of American culture. She has also been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
