Biography
Bette Midler is a popular singer and actress. She has released dozens of records, has appeared in films for over three decades, and is also known as an experienced stage actress in musical theatre. She is one of the best known American singers.
Bette Midler was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on December first, 1945. Graduating from Radford High School, she attended the University of Hawaii where she was a drama major. From a young age she knew that she wanted to work in show business. When she was twenty years old she moved to New York City and started appearing in Broadway and off-Broadway plays as well as singing in clubs. For several years she played the character Tzeitel in "Fiddler on the Roof". Also during this period she is well known for having performed in gay bathhouses and she met her piano accompanist Barry Manilow during these years.
In the early seventies, Bette Midler's music career started to take off. She released her first album, "The Divine Miss M" in 1972 and a follow-up entitled "Bette Midler" in 1973 which were immediately successful. She also started to appear in film roles, being nominated for Best Actress for her 1979 role in "The Rose", based on Janis Joplin. Her film appearances have been both dramatic and comedic. Movies that she has appeared in over her career include "Ruthless People", "Outrageous Fortune", "Big Business", "Beaches", "Down and Out in Beverly Hills", "The First Wives Club", "Scenes from a Mall", "For the Boys" and "Get Shorty". She has continued to release albums at a regular pace, including "Songs for the New Depression", "Broken Blossom", "Thights and Whispers", "No Frills", "Mud Will Be Flung Tonight", "Some People's Lives", "Bette of Roses", "Bathhouse Betty", and "Bette". One of her best known singles is "Wind Beneath My Wings". She also performed "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" on the second to last episode of Johnny Carson's run on "The Tonight Show".
In early 2007, Bette Midler continues to tour to sold out crowds and act in Hollywood films.
