Biography
Bernard Pivot is a journalist and French television personality. He is most famous in France for his interviews and for hosting cultural programs.
Bernard Pivot was born in Lyon, France on May 5th, 1935. His family was temporarily broken up over the course of the Second World War as his father was taken prisoner. After the war Bernard Pivot's family was reunited. Bernard Pivot went to a boarding school from the age of ten and was distinguished in sports activities. Although he was not strong in most academic subjects, with the exception of history and language, Bernard Pivot would go on to graduate second in his class from the Centre de Formation des Journalistes in Paris.
In 1958 at the age of 23, Bernard Pivot joined the newspaper Figaro Litteraire. When Figaro Litteraire shut down in 1971 he moved to Le Figaro, one of the largest newspapers in France. In 1974 he left Le Figaro over a disagreement and soon started a new news magazine called Lire. At around the same time he became the host of the show "Ouvrez les Guillernets". When the government run network that had run the show closed a year later, Bernard Pivot started the show "Apostrophes", a show based around literary reviews, which he hosted until 1990. His next show was "Bouillon de culture", which started out discussing other kinds of media but eventually became focused on books as well. The program "Inside the Actors Studio" hosted by James Lipton was inspired by one of Bernard Pivot's programs.
Bernard Pivot is also responsible for starting a spelling championship in France, which has been known since 1993 as the "Dicos d'or" (the Golden Dictionaries).
As of early 2007, Bernard Pivot continues to appear on numerous French television programs and is revered by the French literary establishment for his programs which have done much to popularize the written word in France.
