Bernadette Peters was born in Queens, New York on February 28, 1948. Her first television appearance was on the show "Juvenile Jury" which her mother put her on when she was three. Throughout her childhood she made various TV appearances including the shows "The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour" and "Name That Tune". Her birth name was Bernadette Lazzara but she used the stage name Bernadette Peters to keep from being stereotyped. During the sixties, Bernadette Peters appeared in Broadway plays. Her first appearance on Broadway was in 1967's "Johnny No-Trump", although she had acted in off-Broadway shows and had been an understudy for "Gypsy" before then. Other musicals that she played in during this period included "Dames at Sea", "George M!", "La Strada", "Mack and Mabel", and "On the Town", becoming critically recognized and moving to starring roles.
During the seventies, Bernadette Peters appeared in films and on television, moving to Los Angeles to pursue a different aspect of her career. She dated famous comedian Steve Martin, and appeared opposite him as the love interest in his classic comedy film "The Jerk". She also appeared in "Pennies From Heaven", for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
In the eighties, Bernadette Peters became involved once again in musical theatre, appearing in "Sunday in the Park with George". For her part as Emma in "Song and Dance" she won a Tony Award on the strength of her singing. She also played in "Into the Woods" and "Anyone Can Whistle". She has continued to appear in musicals throughout the nineties and past the turn of the millennium, particularly Stephen Sondheim musicals. She won another Tony Award in 1999 for playing Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun". She has also recorded solo albums since 1980, three of which were nominated for Grammys.
