Biography
Benny Andersson is a singer / songwriter from Sweden. He is most famous for being in the musical group ABBA. In addition to his career with ABBA he has composed for several well received musicals and has developed a solo career.
Benny Andersson was born in Stockholm, Sweden on December 16th, 1946. Both his father and his grandfather were musicians, and Benny Andersson grew up playing a wide variety of instruments, particularly the accordion, naturally without lessons. The first major band that Benny Andersson joined after graduating from high school was called "The Hep Stars". He wrote the hit song "Sunny Girl" for the Hep Stars during this time, and the band was very successful in Sweden.
ABBA was formed by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, whom he met while on tour with the Hep Stars. Forming the band with their girlfriends Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskog, they first played folk music unsuccessfully but as ABBA they became one of the top selling pop music acts of all time. Benny Andersson helped to compose and produce all of ABBA's songs. After several years of moderately successful albums and touring, the album "Arrival" brought ABBA to international consciousness with the hit songs "Money, Money, Money", "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and "Dancing Queen". ABBA's success endured for a decade from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties.
After losing interest in the band, Benny Andersson went on to compose scores for the musicals "Chess", "Kristina fran Duvemala" and "Mamma Mia". He has also released two solo albums, "Klinga mina klockor" and "November 1989", as well as collaborations with Orsa Spelman. For his musical scores he has been nominated for the Drama Desk Award, Tony Award, and Grammy Award. Since the turn of the millennium he has continued to compose and perform with his band the Benny Andersson Orkester (Benny Andersson's Orchestra).
