Biography
Benjamin Netanyahu is an Israeli politician and a former Prime Minister of Israel. As of 2007, he is the only Prime Minister of Israel to have been born after Israel was founded.
Benjamin Netanyahu was born in Tel Aviv, Israel on October 21st, 1949. His father is a Jewish History professor. His brothers were involved in an elite reconnaissance unit called Sayeret Matkal. At the age of fourteen, Benjamin Netanyahu's family moved from Israel to a Philadelphia suburb. Benjamin Netanyahu graduated from Cheltenham High School and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the MIT Sloan School of Management, as well as Harvard where he studied political science. After working at a consulting group in Boston for a short time, Benjamin Netanyahu returned to Israel. Shortly thereafter in 1982 he would become the Deputy Chief of Mission for the Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C., then their United Nations Ambassador for several years.
In 1988 Benjamin Netanyahu was elected to the Knesset. He served until 1992 in the Knesset when the government was led by Yitzhak Shamir. In 1993, Benjamin Netanyahu became the leader of the Likud political party.
In Israel's first direct election of a Prime Minister in 1996, Benjamin Netanyahu was victorious. Benjamin Netanyahu's victory was largely influenced by a series of attacks that undermined confidence in his competitor Peres. While Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly been seen as distrusting Yasser Arafat, he attempted to negotiate with him in 1998 at the Wye River Accords. However, no real progress was made and fighting continued to break out.
Benjamin Netanyahu gradually lost political power until his defeat in the 1999 election by Ehud Barak. His negotiation with Yasser Arafat caused him to lose influence over the right wing of Israeli politics which had put him into office. Since losing the election, Benjamin Netanyahu has served Israel as Foreign Minister and Finance Minister. In early 2007 it is believed that Benjamin Netanyahu could become Prime Minister again in the next election.
