Biography
Benazir Bhutto is a Pakistan politician. She was the Prime Minister of Pakistan for a twenty month period starting in 1988 before being deposed under controversial circumstances by the President of Pakistan, making her famous as the first female head of a self governing Muslim state. In 1993 she was re-elected but lost the post again via a corruption scandal.
Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi, Pakistan on June 21st, 1953. She is the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the former Premier of Pakistan. When she was fifteen, she started attending Radcliffe College at Harvard University. At the age of twenty she received a Harvard bachelor's degree in political science. She got her master's degree in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University.
Returning to Pakistan after her education, she was put under house arrest during her father's trial and execution. Years later in 1984 she was allowed to leave Pakistan and led the disempowered Pakistan Peoples Party from the United Kingdom. When open elections returned to Pakistan in 1988, Benazir Bhutto came back and became Prime Minister as the Pakistan Peoples Party took control of Pakistan's National Assembly. She was 35 at the time. Twenty months later the President dismissed her on charges of corruption, dissolving the Parliament to do so. Benazir Bhutto had to wait three years for the next election when she again became Prime Minister with the Pakistan Peoples Party. However, she was again charged with corruption.
Benazir Bhutto has been accused of stealing money from the state, as has her husband. She has been the subject of dozens of legal cases. She claims that these allegations have been politically motivated. Other actions of Benazir Bhutto that have been controversial include her support of the Taliban in taking control of neighboring Afghanistan. While the Taliban's policies against women conflicted with her personal politics, she supported them to lead Afghanistan because she believed they would be a stabilizing force.
Benazir Bhutto has been legally prevented from running for Prime Minister again; however she continues to be active in the Pakistan Peoples Party and to travel the world on a lecture circuit, as well as appearing yearly at the White House.
