Ben Crenshaw is a professional golfer. He has played pro golf for actively for over three decades, and is nicknamed "Gentle Ben".
Ben Crenshaw was born in Austin, Texas on January 11th, 1952. He played golf during high school. After graduating from Austin High School he attended the University of Texas. Ben Crenshaw started his pro golf career in 1973 at the age of 21. Over the next couple decades he would consistently impress with his putting ability. He has achieved many wins on the PGA Tour, including the 1973 San Antonio Texas Open, the 1977 Colonial National Invitation, the 1979 Pheonix Open, the 1983 Bryon Nelson Golf Classic, the 1986 Buick Open, the 1990 Southwestern Bell Colonial, the 1992 Celtel Western Open, the 1993 Nestle International and more. He has twice won the Masters Tournament on the PGA Tour, once in 1984 and again in 1995. His putting for the 1995 Masters Tournament was particularly high quality, as he had no three-putts for the entire tournament. He learned his putting style from instructor Harvey Penick, who died one week before Ben Crenshaw's second Masters Tournament victory. All in all, Ben Crenshaw is one of the golfers with the most PGA Tour wins in history.
Ben Crenshaw has remaining a consistently strong player for several decades, winning more seasons than not. He was able to overcome difficulties with Grave's disease throughout the eighties and go on to win a second Masters Tournament a decade later. He received the Bob Jones Award for distinguished sportsmanship in 1991. He played on a Ryder Cup team four times and captained the team once in 1999. Recently, in 2002, Ben Crenshaw was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. For about two decades he has been involved with the golf course design company of Coore & Crenshaw with business partner Bill Coore. He continues to work in course design and to play professionally, although since the turn of the millennium he has limited his tournament appearances.
