Biography
Belinda Carlisle is a singer / songwriter. She was the co-founder of the Go-Go's and the band's lead vocalist. She has also recorded a number of successful solo albums.
Belinda Carlisle was born in Hollywood, California on August 17th, 1958. She graduated from Newbury Park High School in 1976. The next year she was the drummer for "The Germs", a local punk band - although ironically she never performed live with the band because of sickness. After leaving the Germs she started an all female rock band called The Misfits, which would later be renamed to The Go-Go's. The band would go on to be one of the most successful pop bands of the eighties.
The first Go-Go's album entitled "Beauty and the Beat" was a surprise hit that stayed at the top of the American music charts for a month and a half. The Go-Go's had a number one album, becoming the first all female rock band to make that achievement. Their follow-up albums were similarly successful and they were one of the bands most responsible for popularizing the "New Wave" sound of the eighties. While The Go-Go's had a wholesome image during their time of fame, they are now known to have lived a rock star lifestyle full of drugs and groupies. However, Belinda Carlisle is now happily married to producer Morgan Mason and has a son.
In 1985, Belinda Carlisle left the band and started a solo career. Originally, she was able to pursue this career successfully both in America and Europe; however following her number one hit song "Heaven Is a Place on Earth", her subsequent albums tended to do more and more poorly in the United States, while continuing to sell well in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe. With albums like "Runaway Horses", "Live Your Life Be Free", "Real", and "A Woman and a Man", Belinda Carlisle's solo career continued in Europe throughout the nineties. She released her Greatest Hits album in the United Kingdom in 1999. Recently, Belinda Carlisle has made various television appearances on shows such as Simon Cowell's "Celebrity Duets" (in 2006). She continues to record, with her most recent album being "Voila", released early 2007.
