Biography
Beck is an internationally famous rock musician. He is known for being one of the most unusual artists in the alternative rock movement of the nineties.
Beck was born in Los Angeles, California on July 8, 1970. His parents were a visual artist and a musician. Growing up in Los Angeles he was influenced by many musical and artistic styles. He dropped out of high school to travel around the world busking. By the early nineties he had a lot of experience playing live and had started to develop his personal style. Returning to Los Angeles, he worked lots of little jobs for very little pay while playing as many shows as he could. He was discovered by a small label called Bong Load Custom Records, and became the focus of a bidding war between the major labels when his single "Loser" became a radio hit. He ended up signing with Geffen, the label which offered him the most creative control, including the ability to release independent albums during his term of his contract.
Beck released the album "Mellow Gold" on Geffen, which sold very well, and simultaneously released two albums on smaller labels: "Stereopathetic Soulmanure" and "One Foot in the Grave". Beck toured around the world and appeared on Lollapalooza in 1995. Beck's second album on Geffen, "Odelay", was released in 1996 and helped prevent him from being seen as a one hit wonder on the strength of "Loser". Odelay won two Grammys and sold over two million copies. His third album "Mutations" was the topic of a long legal battle. Beck had intended to release the album on Bong Load Records but Geffen had released it instead. Beck continued to release successful albums on Geffen despite the ongoing legalities, being nominated for the Best Album Grammy in 1999 for "Midnite Vultures", and selling his first top ten American album "Sea Change" in 2002. "Guero" was released in 2004 with the cooperation of Jack White from "The White Stripes", and "The Information" was released in late 2006. In 2007, Beck continues to produce music and tour.
