Biography
Barry Zito is a pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. He is one of the best pitchers in modern baseball, and is popularly known for his idiosyncratic personality.
Barry Zito was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 13th, 1978, and grew up in a suburb of San Diego. He earned all-league baseball honors in his last year of high school at University of San Diego High School, then freshman All-America Honor in college, at the University of California Santa Barbara. Barry Zito transferred twice during college, to Pierce College and to the University of Southern California. While at the University of Southern California, USA Today Baseball Weekly named him a first team All-American selection. He was also named pitcher of the year by the PAC-10 college athletic conference.
Despite being drafted twice before by the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers, Barry Zito did not choose to enter the major league until 2000, after being signed by the Oakland Athletics in the 1999 amateur entry draft for a $1,590,000 bonus. Two years later, Barry Zito won the Cy Young Award, being first in terms of wins for the American League. Barry Zito has placed consistently high in strikeouts over the years: in 2004, he was tenth in the American League, and in 2005 he was fifth. He has also been on the AL All Star Team during the years of 2002, 2003 and 2006. In mid-2006, Barry Zito changed agents, getting Scott Boras. Later that year, he signed a free agent contract with the Giants for one hundred and twenty six million - the highest priced contract for a pitcher in the history of the major league.
Because of Barry Zito's odd behavior off the mound he is known by the nicknames "Captain Quirk" and "Planet Zito". He lives a simple life, without much furniture or a television. He dyed his hair blue early on when he was pitching for Oakland. He is heavily into surfing and Zen meditation.
