Biography
Barry Pepper is a young Canadian film actor. He is best known for his appearance in the hit film "Saving Private Ryan", where he played a religious sniper.
Barry Pepper was born in Campbell River, British Columbia on April 4, 1970. When he was five years old, his family completed building a ship, called "The Moonlighter". For five years he and his family lived on this fifty foot ship and traveled through the South Pacific. As a child, he and his family entertained each other by playing games and comedic acting; he also learned to dance from Polynesian children. When they returned to Canada, Barry Pepper excelled in art and sports throughout high school. During college, he started going to the Vancouver Actors Studio, which convinced him to try pursuing an acting career.
Barry Pepper's first major role was on a Canadian television program called "Madison"; a show that was basically similar to "90210". He made many small television appearances over the early nineties in TV shows such as "Sliders", "Highlander", "M.A.N.T.I.S.", "The Outer Limits", "Viper", and "The Sentinel". Barry Pepper's first role that brought him widespread recognition was as Private Daniel Jackson, the religious sniper in Stephen Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan". The inertia from that helped him to land several more roles in large budget movies including "Enemy of the State", "The Green Mile", and Mel Gibson's "We Were Soldiers". In most of his roles he has played relatively simplistic soldiers or other action oriented characters, and tends to be passed over for leading roles. This may have something to do with his first major leading role in 2000 being for the film "Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000" - a movie based on an L. Ron Hubbard science fiction novel that was universally panned and is considered to be one of the worst films of all time. Barry Pepper continues to appear in movies as of early 2007.
