Barbra Streisand is one of the most famous and successful female entertainers in the world. She has pursued her career as a singer, songwriter, actress, film maker and political activist. Starting in the music industry before progressing to film, she has sold over 71 million albums, making her the top-selling American female artist of all time. Her movie appearances have also been highly successful, and over the course of her career she has collected several Oscars, Emmys, Grammy Awards and Golden Globes.
Barbra Streisand was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 24, 1942. She went to high school at Erasmus Hall High School, where she sang in the choir with future music star Neil Diamond and was classmates with Bobby Fischer. During her teenage years she became a nightclub singer after entering a music competition. She shortened her name from Barbara to Barbra during her early club singing career to sound more unique. Barbra Streisand made her first Broadway appearance at the age of 20 in 1962, in "I Can Get It For Your Wholesale". The same year she obtained a record contract to make "The Barbra Streisand Album", for which she won two Grammys. Her records were very successful, and at one time in her early career she had all of her first three albums in the Top Ten at one time. Over the course of her career, Barbra Streisand has made over sixty albums. Her career has spanned decades and she has always remained popular.
Before starting her music career in her teens, Barbra Streisand had dreamed of being an actress, and with the popularity she achieved in her music career, she was able to begin acting in movies and found great success there as well. The first movie Barbra Streisand appeared in was "Funny Girl" in 1968, an adaptation of a hit Broadway musical she had been in. For "Funny Girl", she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Other roles that she has been successful in over the decades include "Yentl" and "The Prince of Tides". She has also been politically active, raising funds for the Democratic Party.
As of early 2007, Barbra Streisand continues to be highly popular, with her last concert tour making nearly one hundred million dollars. She remains popular as she records and performs.
