Biography
Barbara Walters is a journalist who has appeared for several decades on American television and has become one of the best known American media personalities. She is best known as an interviewer, and the first woman co-anchor of a network evening news program. Shows on which she has appeared for extended durations include the "ABC Evening News", "20/20", "The Today Show", and "The View".
Barbara Walters was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 25, 1929. Her father was a theatrical booking agent who opened a chain of nightclubs called the Latin Quarter, and produced the famous "Ziegfeld Follies" on Broadway in 1943. Because she grew up around celebrities due to her father's business, Barbara Walters said later that she was able to interview famous people without being in awe of them. Barbara Walters attended various private schools in New York City, then went to Sarah Lawrence College where she got her bachelor's degree majoring in English. Her first job after graduation was as a publicist. She then became a news writer, landing at the "Today Show" on NBC in 1961.
After a year of working as a writer and researcher for NBC, she grew into a full fledged reporter. Bucking the tradition of former "Today Show" girls who were mostly actresses that conveyed prewritten material and were frequently replaced, Barbara Walters provided well considered and researched news stories. Over the decade of the sixties her popularity gradually climbed. Finally in 1974, Barbara Walters became the first female co-host of the "Today Show". Barbara Walters is most famous for her interviews, and her most watched interview of all time was with Monica Lewinsky, the woman who had an affair with President Clinton. Since the late nineties, Barbara Walters has co-hosted the all female talk show "The View". She continues to work on television reporting and performing interviews as of early 2007.
