Biography
Barbara Eden is a film and television actress who become famous during the late sixties as the title character Jeannie in the sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie". She also made numerous appearances on 60s television programs including "Gunsmoke", "The Andy Griffith Show" and "I Love Lucy", as well as musical appearances on variety shows and Bob Hope specials.
Barbara Eden was born as Barbara Jean Moorhead in Tucson, Arizona on August 23, 1934. Her name was changed to Barbara Huffman when she was three because of her mother's remarriage, and again to Barbara Eden when her manager told her that the name Huffman wouldn't work to her benefit as a Hollywood actress. After graduating from a San Francisco high school in 1949, Barbara Eden found lots of work as a television actress in shows like "I Love Lucy", "Perry Mason", and "Bachelor Father". She also appeared in the final episode of "Route 66". One of her greatest successes during her early years was an appearance in the film "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", an Irwin Allen science fiction tale. She appeared in several other less noteworthy movies in supporting roles before finding her most successful role as the title character in the long running sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie".
"I Dream of Jeannie" ran for five years from 1965 until 1970. The story involved a genie who was set free by an astronaut. As a fantasy style television sitcom it was inspired by the recent success of Bewitched, as well as a movie about a genie called "The Brass Bottle", in which Barbara Eden had played a supporting role. Similar to Bewitched, the plots of "I Dream of Jeannie" involve a magical girl having to prevent people from finding out about her powers while using them to help the man she loves. While the show was somewhat successful during its original run on NBC, it became far more popular when it went into syndication and was one of the highest rated series in the seventies.
As of early 2007, Barbara Eden is involved in promotion for the DVD release of "I Dream of Jeannie", having continued to appear in films and shows based on the series over the years, in addition to various other television appearances.
