Barbara Bush was the former First Lady of the United States of America. She is the wife of George H. W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States. She is also the mother of George W. Bush, the current U.S. President as of early 2007, as well as Jeb Bush, the Governor of Florida.
Barbara Bush was born Barbara Pierce in New York City on June 8, 1925. She is distantly related to Franklin Pierce, the fourteen President of the United States. She is a seventh generation American. Barbara Bush first met her future husband George H. W. Bush when she sixteen years old at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. They became engaged before George H. W. Bush went to Europe as a pilot during the Second World War. During the war, George H. W. Bush named three of his planes, Barbara, Barbara II and Barbara III after her. The two of them were married at the beginning of 1945 when he was able to return to America on leave. They moved to Midland, Texas after he returned permanently from the war and graduated from Yale.
Barbara Bush became a popular national figure during the presidency of her husband for her frequently delivered opinions and quips. Many schools have been named after Barbara Bush, including three primary schools in Texas and two middle schools. A library in Texas is also named after her. She has been very involved in charity fundraising and is interested in health. She is on the boards of the Mayo Clinic and AmeriCares. In Portland, Maine, the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital is named after her. She is also involved in philanthropy through her own Barbara Bush Foundation, and through Pi Beta Phi's chapter at Texas A&M University.
