Biography
The Backstreet Boys are an American boy band pop group that rose to extreme international fame during the nineties and the first years of the 21st century. They have sold more records than any other boy band in history.
The Backstreet Boys were first assembled in 1993 by Lou Pearlman, a Florida entrepeneur who was inspired by the New Kids on the Block. The original members of the band were Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Alexander James McLean, Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell, with ages ranging from 12 to 21. Their first concert was in Orlando Florida at SeaWorld, and they made various appearances that year at malls and schools. In 1994, the Backstreet Boys got their first record deal with Jive Records. Their first single "We've Got It Goin' On" only did moderately well in America, but they were more successful in Europe, where their first album quickly went gold. They toured extensively throughout Europe during this period, doing particularly well in Germany, where they reached their first platinum album and also Austria, where "I'll Never Break Your Heart" was a number one hit single.
The Backstreet Boys started to become popular in the United States in 1997, when grunge and rock were starting to lose ground to pop. Their second album sold well in America as well as worldwide, fueled by the popular single "Quit Playing Games With My Heart". The Backstreet Boys toured extensively throughout America for the first time, appearing in 39 cities throughout the country in a 1998 tour. In 1999, the Backstreet Boys achieved their first Diamond album (over ten million copies sold). That same year they released "Millennium", an album that sold over a million copies in its first week of sales, setting the new record. They appeared on the new millennium's first Rolling Stone cover. Shortly after their next successful album "Black and Blue", the Backstreet Boys entered a hiatus period during which their management changes and they released a Greatest Hits album. Nick Carter also started to become more interested in his solo career during this time. In 2005, the Backstreet Boys released a new album "Comeback: Never Gone", which was successful but not to the same degree as their earlier albums.
In recent years, the line-up of the Backstreet Boys has changed repeatedly, but the group continues to exist and as of 2007 is soon to release a new album.
