Ayrton Senna was a famous race car driver, a three time world champion of the Brazilian Formula One.
Ayrton Senna was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on March 21, 1960. He was born into a wealthy family and his father was interested in racing, so Ayrton Senna was exposed to racing from a young age. He drove karts as a young child from the time he was four years old, and entering his first competition when he turned thirteen. Racing often during those years informally on the streets around his home, he developed his skills, and went on to win the South American Kart Championship at the age of seventeen. In 1981, he won the British Formula Ford 1600. A year later he won the British and European Formula Ford 2000 Championships, and in 1983 he won the Macau Grand Prix. The next year, Ayrton Senna started his World Championship Formula One career.
In 1984, Ayrton Senna won a World Championship point driving a car built by the Toleman team, at the South African Grand Prix. That same year he was on the podium for several other Formula One races and appeared in other races such as the 1000km Nurburging. His performance on the Formula One circuit grew over the next few years as he joined the Lotus team and was able to use superior cars. His first Formula One Grand Prix victory was at the 1985 Portugal Grand Prix. Later in 1988 he would join the McLaren Team and won at the 1989 German Grand Prix. His last win before his tragic death would be at the 1993 Australian Grand Prix. Over the course of his career, Ayrton Senna was in 162 races, out of which he had 80 podium finishes, 41 wins, and 19 fastest laps.
Ayrton Senna died on May 1, 1994 during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. While leading the race, his car went off track and struck a concrete barrier, causing him to die from brain damage at the age of 34. He is well remembered as one of the greatest and most determined Formula One racers ever.
