Biography
Axl Rose is a world famous rock and roll musician. He rose to fame in America during the eighties as the lead singer of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses.
Axl Rose was born in Lafayette, Indiana on February 6, 1962. His early musical experiences came from singing at church. He grew up in a very religious environment; however he has claimed later in life that he was abused by both his biological father, who left the family at age two, and his stepfather. Though he was born with the name William Bailey, with the first name of his birth father and the last name of his stepfather, he later stopped using that name and changed to "W. Rose". The name "Axl" came later, from the name of a band he had played in during his high school days. Axl Rose was in trouble frequently with the police in Lafayette and was kicked out of his house at the age of 16 for not cutting his hair. He played in several bands during this time and eventually decided to go to Los Angeles to escape his problems in Lafayette and pursue his music career.
During the 1980s, Axl Rose appeared in a number of bands trying to combine the styles of punk and heavy metal. These bands included Hollywood Rose, Rapidfire and L.A. Guns. He formed the band Guns N' Roses in 1985. The first Guns N' Roses album, "Appetite for Destruction", was released in 1987. While the album was not immediately successful, Guns N' Roses became more and more popular over the following year, with popular songs including "Paradise City", "Welcome to the Jungle", and "Sweet Child O' Mine". Additional albums released over the next few years, as the band toured extensively, included "G N' R Lies", "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II". The band became notorious during these touring years for their alcohol and drug abuse. Gradually the popularity of their music was eroded by the rise of grunge, and by the mid-nineties the band as it had existed was functionally over.
To this day, Axl Rose continues to play occassional shows with bands under the name "Guns N' Roses", and has been working on an album, "imminent" for many years, called "Chinese Democracy".
