Biography
Avril Lavinge is a Canadian singer-songwriter who has become well known throughout North America and the world for her skater / rock-girl persona and a number of pop-rock hits.
Avril Lavinge was born in Napanee, Ontario on September 27, 1984. Her musical ability was recognized at a young age, and at the age of fifteen she won a contest to sing onstage with Shania Twain. In 2000 she got a recording contract with Arista Records, with whom she recorded her first solo album, "Let Go".
"Let Go" was released in 2002 and became an immediate success. In America the album reached number two in sales, and in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada it reached number one. Avril Lavinge became the youngest female soloist at that time to have had a number one selling U.K. album. In a number of months, "Let Go" became multiplatinum; it has since sold over thirteen million copies around the world and was the best selling album for a female artist and the best selling debut album that entire year. The singles from this first album were "Complicated", "Sk8ter Boi", "I'm With You", and "Losing Grip". Avril Lavinge was nominated for eight Grammy Awards, won four Juno Awards and the World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Canadian Singer.
In 2004, Avril Lavinge released her second album "Under My Skin" which became the number one best seller in over a dozen countries, including America and the United Kingdom. "Under My Skin" was written with lots of collaborations, including Chantal Kreviazuk, Butch Walker, Even Taubenfeld and Ben Moody. While the album sold extremely well, the singles didn't have the same level of success that songs like "Complicated" and "Sk8ter Boi" did in 2002. Avril Lavinge continued to tour in support of the record, and in 2006, she represented Canada in Turin, Italy at the close of the 2006 Winter Olympics.
As of early 2007, Avril Lavinge is preparing to release her third album "The Best Damn Thing". The leading singles including "Girlfriend" and "Keep Holding On" have been performing well on the radio. Avril Lavinge's career continues to thrive, and with an expected successful release of the next album she will continue to tour.
