Biography
Ava Gardner was a famous film and television actress during the black and white movie era. She is on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest stars of all time.
Ava Gardner was born in Brogden, North Carolina on December 24, 1922. She was born into a family of poor farmers as the youngest in a family of seven children. After losing their farm, the Gardner family moved repeatedly, finding and losing work in a number of larger nearby towns. Ava Gardner graduated from high school in Wilson, North Carolina in 1939. Two years later in 1941 Ava Gardner had her photo taken on a visit to New York City by a professional photographer Larry Tarr, the man who had married Ava Gardner's sister Beatrice. Larry Tarr put the photograph of Ava Gardner in the front window of his shop as an advertisement, and was encouraged by a man posing as an MGM talent scout to try and get Ava Gardner's number to send the picture to MGM Studios. Soon after, Ava Gardner had an interview with MGM in New York City and was offered a film contract. She left college in North Carolina and traveled to Hollywood.
In Hollywood Ava Gardner met actor Mickey Rooney and was married to him in 1942. Her first distinctive movie appearance was in the film "The Killers" with Burt Lancaster and helped her establish a national reputation. Ava Gardner continued appearing in dozens of movies throughout the forties and fifties, including "One Touch of Venus", "East Side, West Side", "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", and "Mogambo", for which she was nominated for an Oscar but lost to Audrey Hepburn's performance in "Roman Holiday". In all, her film career lasted about forty years.
Ava Gardner was married and divorced several times, and had romantic relationships with Mickey Rooney, Howard Hughes, Artie Shaw, Frank Sinatra and Ernest Hemingway, although she only married Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra. Her relationships tended to be extremely rocky, and she was often reportedly poorly on by the Hollywood newspapers. Near the end of her life she moved to London and ultimately died of pneumonia in 1990 at the age of 67 after a period of steadily worsening health.
