Biography
Art Garfunkel is a popular musician and actor. He is the most well known for his contributions to the folk duo of Simon and Garfunkel that became popular during the sixties.
Art Garfunkel was born in New York City, New York, on November 5, 1941. He was interested in music from a young age and met Paul Simon, with whom he would record most of his successful songs, in sixth grade. From the age of fifteen, Art Garfunkel performed songs with his friend Paul. He attended Columbia University after graduating high school, and joined an a cappella group called the Kingsmen during that time. After graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor's degree in art history, Art Garfunkel rejoined Paul Simon to record songs under the name "Simon and Garfunkel" and pursue a professional recording career.
The first Simon and Garfunkel album "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." was released by Columbia Records in 1964, but was not an immediate success. Simon and Garfunkel split up for a time, but reunited the next year after producer Tom Wilson's remix of their song "The Sound of Silence" became a surprise number one hit. During the sixties, Simon and Garfunkel were one of the most successful popular music acts. They finally split up for good in 1970 right after releasing the successful album "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Since then, as of 2007, Simon and Garfunkel have reunited on occasion, first in the early eighties for a successful world tour following a famous Central Park concert, and again in 2003 and 2004 for another highly successful world tour.
Art Garfunkel has released solo albums over the past twenty years, but none of them have reached the same level of success as the Simon and Garfunkel duo. Art Garfunkel has also appeared in several movies, such as "Carnal Knowledge" and "Catch-22". He continues to pursue his independent musical career as of early 2007.
