Biography
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a world famous bodybuilder and actor who has recently become involved in politics and is currently the Governor of California. He was born in Graz, Austria on July 30, 1947. He has since become a U.S. citizen (in 1983), but remains an Austrian citizen as well.
In his teens in Austria, Arnold Schwarzenegger was introduced to bodybuilding by his soccer coach, who had taken the entire team to weight training. Young Arnold Schwarzenegger became very interested in bodybuilding, to the extent that he would break into the nearby gym when it was closed so he could continue to train. Arnold Schwarzenegger's first debut in a bodybuilding competition was in 1963 at a small contest in Graz where he won second place. His first major victory was the Junior Mr. Europe title, which he won during his year of mandatory Austrian military service while sneaking off base. In 1966 he traveled to London for the Mr. Universe competition, where he came in second. The next year however, at the age of twenty, he returned to win the NABBA Mr. Universe competition, becoming the youngest ever to do so. In the late sixties Arnold Schwarzenegger moved the United States, continuing to make progress in his bodybuilding career. The biggest bodybuilding competition in the world at the time was Mr. Olympia, which Arnold Schwarzenegger won in 1970. Arnold Schwarzenegger went on to hold the Mr. Olympia title for six years running, announcing his retirement from bodybuilding after the 1975 competition while still at the top of his game.
Arnold Schwarzenegger then began to focus on pursuing the film career that he had followed alongside bodybuilding since the early seventies. His first highly successful film appearance was in the semi-fictional documentary Pumping Iron, that was based around the world of bodybuilding and the story of his final Mr. Olympia win and retirement. He then appeared in a number of small roles until a breakthrough with 1982's "Conan the Barbarian" brought him to national attention. From that point on, Arnold Schwarzenegger became an increasingly popular action star, appearing in movies such as the "Terminator" trilogy, "Predator", "Total Recall", "The Running Man", "True Lies", "Eraser", and "Jingle All the Way". His most successful role was as the "good" Terminator seen in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", and during this period he arguably became the most internationally famous action film star.
In recent years Arnold Schwarzenegger has slowed his film career to become more involved in politics, entering the 2003 California recall election and becoming Governor of California. He has since won re-election and as of early 2007, continues to serve as the "Governator".
