Biography
Arnold Palmer is a famous American golfer. As the first golfer to become famous for appearing on televised golf, Arnold Palmer is one of the most popular golf players in the world. Since 1955, he has won many events and awards, including events on the Champions Tour and PGA Tour, and he received the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. Arnold Palmer has also been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Arnold Palmer was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, on September 10, 1929. As a child, Palmer was taught golf at Latrobe Country Club by his father, a golf professional. Although young Arnold Palmer was only allowed on the golf course during the early morning or late afternoon when no one else was playing, he quickly displayed a talent and was able to break a score of 70 at the age of seven. After graduating high school he was able to secure a golf scholarship to Wake Forest University; however the death of a close friend caused him to drop out and join the Coast Guard. Turning back to golf again after a few years, he won the 1954 U.S. Amateur Championship, which encouraged him to continue pursuing a professional career. On the 1955 Pro Tour, Arnold Palmer won the 1955 Canadian Open.
During the fifties and sixties, golf became a televised sport, and the popularity of golf on television was established largely based on Arnold Palmer's star quality. Arnold Palmer's talent, background and winning personality contributed to his televised popularity.
In 1958, Arnold Palmer won the 1958 Masters tournament. He would go on to win six more championship titles: three Masters Tournaments in 1960, 1962 and 1964, the Open Championship in 1961 and 1962 (also known as the British Open, which he helped to popularize among U.S. players with a series of high-exposure victories), and the U.S. Open in 1960.
In additional to a lengthy winning career in professional golf, Arnold Palmer has started his own golf club, "Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club and Lodge", co-founded the Golf Channel, and run a successful business career capitalizing on his fame. In 1971, Arnold Palmer bought the Latrobe Country Club where he played as a child and where his father worked.
