Biography
Ariel Sharon is an Israeli politician who acted as a military leader and was Prime Minister of Israel until early 2006, when a stroke caused him to fall into a coma from which he has not recovered.
Ariel Sharon was born in Kfar Mahal, Israel on February 27, 1928. He joined the Haganah, a Jewish paramilitary organization in what was then British-ruled Palestine, at age fourteen. He was an infantry commander during the 1948 Israeli War of Independence, remaining in the Israeli army after the war ended. His military career at that time involved intelligence and retaliation against attacks from neighboring countries, for which he created a special commando unit. In 1956, during the Suez-Sinai War, Ariel Sharon commanded a paratrooper brigade; however many Israelis died due to his going beyond orders, which slowed further career advancement. For the next ten years he would become more involved in running military schools and in 1966 became the head of the Army Training Department.
In 1967, Ariel Sharon fought in the Six Day War, commanding an armored division. Later during this period Ariel Sharon became Chief of the IDF Southern Command (having previously served as Head of the IDF Northern Command). He also was promoted to the rank of Major-General, the highest rank that he would see in his thirty-plus year long military career.
During the seventies, Ariel Sharon entered politics, joining the Gahal party, co-founding the Likud party, establishing the Shlomzion party, and being repeatedly elected to the Knesset. Throughout the next three decades he would hold positions including Secretary of Agriculture, Minister of Defense (from which he had to resign after a massacre during the 1982 Lebanon War), Minister of Trade and Industry, Minister of Construction and Housing, Minister of National Infrastructure, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 2001, Ariel Sharon was elected Prime Minister of Israel in a landslide. Repeated and protracted failures to reach a workable peace agreement with the Palestinians weakened the support of the United States; however Ariel Sharon became extremely popular in Israel during this time for his relatively extremist views towards Palestine. In early 2006, during a restructuring of political power in Israel for which Sharon had resigned as Prime Minister and founded the new political party Kadima for the next set of elections, Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke and had to be put into an induced coma. As of early 2007, he has not recovered.
