Biography
Born November 1, 1962, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Anthony Kiedis has become one of the more memorable singers and songwriters of our age. He is the lead singer of Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as one of the band's founders, and writes most of the group's lyrics.

He grew up listening to the popular groups of the 1960s and 1970s-Stevei Wonder, Led Zeppelin, etc.-and these artists inspired and influenced his work. He met two other members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hillel Slovak and Michael Balzary during his high school years. After a few years' attempt at colleges at UCLA and a little time recovering from drug abuse, Kedis approached Slovak and Balzary (as well as Jack Irons) to form "Tony Flow and the Miraculous Masters of Mayhem."

After Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988, Kiedis tried again to overcome his own addictions. Many of his song lyrics focused on Hillel's death ("Under the Bridge") and on the struggle to beat addiction. He has been "clean" since 200, according to him. Since the loss of Hillil. The band has produced only nine albums in the studio, but has been known for some of music's most meaningful and powerful lyrics. The early lyrics were often rapped, sometimes quite fast, but gradually changed to a melodic line. Eventually Kedies began to prefer singing, and this became evident beginning with the 1999 recording Californication.

Kedies also has some acting credits to his name, including appearances in Point Break and The Chase. Altogether as of 2005 he has 45 film and television appearances as well as nine soundtrack credits. Although Red Hot Chili Peppers has only released nine studio albums, they also have two remastered CDs and a live recording from Hyde Park. The six-time Grammy nominees' last hit, "Dani California," enjoyed 14 weeks on Billboard's chart as number one, and received seven nominations at the MTV Music Awards.
