Annette Bening was born in Topeka, Kansas, on May 29, 1958. The family moved to Wichita, Kansas, a year after her birth where they remained until moving to San Diego in 1965.
Bening began acting when she appeared in the junior high production of The Sound of Music. She went on to study drama in high school.
She ended up getting a degree in theater arts at San Francisco State University. In 1985, she and her first husband moved to Denver, Colorado. Her husband went to Colorado to work at the Shakespeare Festival in Boulder, Colorado. The couple broke up the following year.
In 1991, Bening starred in Bugsy, where she met Warren Beatty. The two began to see each other secretly. The ended up getting married in 1992. They live in Los Angeles and have four children: Kathlyn Elizabeth Beatty (born 1992), Benjamin Maclean Beatty (born 1994), Isabel Ira Ashley Beatty (born 1997) and Ella Corinne Beatty (born 2000). As an aside, Bening's husband, Warren Beatty, is the brother of actress Shirley MacLaine.
Bening has also starred in The Grifters, The Siege, and American President. Her role in the 1999 film American Beauty would bring her the greatest attention and the most critical acclaim of her career.
Bening intends to keep performing in film. She has not done much in the way of television acting since the very early days of her career when she would occasionally take on guest roles in different programs. However, in 2006, she was the host of a Saturday Night Live episode.
