Biography
Born October 16, 1925, Angela Brigid Lansbury CBE is a British actress known worldwide for her award-winning dramatic acting. She is the daughter of actress Moyna Macgill and businessman Edgar Lansbury, and was encouraged by her parents from an early age to pursue her love of entertaining. After her father's death and an unhappy home life after her mother remarried, the family fled to America without Angela's stepfather and began a new life.

It was an auspicious move, and soon Angela soon found herself cast in Gaslight for which she was nominated for an Academy Award (1944), and The Picture of Dorian Gray. She also landed parts on Broadway, and in 1966 she played her best role-the title character in Mame. Mame was performed 1508 times, and Lansbury won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. It was on the stage of Mame that she also met Bea Arthur, and the two were fast and lifelong friends.

Her popularity spilled over into other areas of her life, and she quickly decided to make use of this for humanitarian causes. Whever she appeared, whether it was on a game show or in another public arena, she made a please for charity, such as contributions for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's yearly fund drive.

Over the years Lansbury's shining talents led her to other Broadway roles as well as film and television spots, including Miss Marple in Agatha Christie's In the Mirror Crack'd.
She also performed voice-overs for animated films such as The Last Unicorn, Anastasia, and possibly her most famous voice, the teapot in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

After decades of work on stage and in film, Angela Lansbury landed possibly her best and most popular role: Jessica Fletcher in the series Murder, She Wrote. This lighthearted mystery series aired from 1984 to 1996, and is one of U.S. television's longest-running mystery/detective series. Possibly due to this work she was appointed by United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II as Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a richly deserved honor among many, many others.
