Biography
It was a sad day for tennis when Andre Agassi retired, but it was a necessity-he suffered great pain from sciatica and a bone spur, and September 3, 2006, saw his last game. However, it's not the last the world will hear from him. He created a foundation for at-risk youth in southern Nevada, and opened the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas. The school is a charter prep school for at-risk youth.

Andre Kirk Agassi was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 29, 1970. His father, a boxer who emigrated from Iran, indoctrinated young Andre before he could walk. He hung tennis balls above the baby's crib to develop his eye movement, and had him play with balloons and paddles in his high chair. Later, his father would coach his son to hit between 3,000 and 5,000 tennis balls every day that they kept in sixty garbage cans. As Andre developed and played his matches, his father's poor behavior got him thrown out of the spectator's stands. Andre's own rebelliousness eventually got him kicked out of a famous tennis school.

After he turned pro at age 16, Andre maintained the rebellious youth image, and he even went so far as to refuse to play at Wimbledon because of the dress code. Eventually he gave in and donned the white. Eventually he would win the important tennis titles as well as an Olympic Gold in men's singles in 1996. A recurring injury in his wrist in 1997 made that year his lowest of his career. Although he would condition and work at strengthening himself for tournaments, and win some, overall his game was over in 2006 when ankle and leg pain dropped his standing to 112th.

But now Agassi spends his time helping disadvantaged youth. Aside from the school and other activities, he also helps them develop their athletic potential.
